"You are meant to grace the world with your dance, to follow the lead of Jesus wherever he leads you." - Captivating

Aside from Jesus, "...traveling is the great true love of my life...I am loyal and constant in my love for travel...I just don't care what it puts me through. Because I adore it. Because its mine. Because it looks like me." - Eat.Pray.Love.

Here you will find my travels, not just physical travels but emotional and spiritual as well...journeys to different places in the world and journeys of the heart. And, of course, fun and silliness too :)

Real friends will share even a strawberry. (Slovakian proverb)

"Right from the start you had a way of making me laugh. The more we talked, the more I knew you'd become one of my favorite people...and that's what happened."

Carrie (my roommate) and I were dancing around our apartment the other day... We realized (and have had several conversations lately) that we really need to enjoy this time in our lives. Too often I get caught up in wanting to get married and have a family (especially as more and more friends get married). However, God is teaching me to savor this special time in my life. I don't have the responsibilities that a marriage and family inevitably bring and can instead freely just enjoy time with friends. I am so thankful for the wonderful friends God has placed in my life at this time. I can also travel more, read more for myself, and use this time to personally grow in my relationship with Christ. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure I will be thrilled when God decides to place that man in my life but until then, I'm learning not to miss this time.

In honor of this revelation I had been planning to do a couple posts about my friends. This one is going to be about what I'm thankful for in my girlfriends and then next I am going to do one about my guyfriends. Coincidentally,
Dani did a similar post about girlfriends but I decided to go ahead and do mine anyway...I guess great minds think alike :) In Captivating, (told you I loved it) the authors talk about how women are extremely relational which causes Satan to go after our relationships...hit us where it hurts the most. They discuss how our friendships (especially with women) can so often feel opposed...and they do! We can be so catty with each other sometimes so I wanted to recognize what I am thankful for in my friends as I try daily to focus on all the positives in my relationships rather than the negatives. So here goes...

Why my girlfriends are great: (although some of these may apply to specific people, I just made this a general list)...you know who you are...

  • they will exhaustingly overanalyze the situation with me again and again
  • then after the overanalyzation will gently remind me that God is in control

  • inventing secret codes together

  • along with the secret codes is understanding each other without any words

  • we watch the same tv shows

  • someone to have a post-event eval with (or high five)

  • not having to say "fine" when they ask how I am

  • someone to split food with at restaurants

  • dance parties

  • sending and receiving cards to and from them

  • laughing together (especially when no one else is laughing)

  • understanding the importance of sprinkles

  • "we just had a whole conversation about doughnuts"

  • surrogate families

  • having a wingman

  • coffee talk

  • that one of them is my mom

  • sharing recipes

  • someone to stick to and cheat on diets with

  • loving me despite the painted purple sweatsuit incident

  • perfect traveling companions

  • shopping

  • someone to review your outfit choices

  • small group Bible talks and life talks

  • someone to do workout videos with ("Peppaseed, Peppaseed" and "Sexy eyes")
  • future bridesmaids

  • someone to plan events and social outings with

  • understand the importance of the RSVP even it is to a text or evite

  • knows the names of my extended family and asks about them once in a while
  • sick days
  • neck therapy
  • they challenge me politically, mentally, and spiritually
  • we (usually) know what its okay to tease each other about and what its not

  • they "get" me

Ladies, thank you so much for your friendships...you truly mean so much to me and make my life so much more joyful.

"A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere, before whom I may think out loud." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, 'What! You too? I thought I was the only one." - C.S. Lewis

"The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is a spiritual inspiration that comes to one when you discover that someone else believes in you and is willing to trust you with a friendship." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Next up...guys...guys that are friends....guy friends.

Start spreading the news...

We just got back from NYC...and, as usual, it was wonderful. I absolutely love that city...there is just nowhere else like it. As much as I do love it...I realized more than ever this trip that its a fabulous place to visit but I couldn't live there. I appreciate more now the living space we have here, the lower cost of things, but especially the friendliness of people. I'm not saying New Yorkers are awful people, there is just not that genuine friendliness you often find here. (And I also like that men here don't wear skinny jeans...and, for that matter, don't really care that much about fashion.) We did have a great time though...seeing several shows, eating at great places, shopping, and just exploring the city. We got to see Grease, Mary Poppins, and a brand new show Cry-baby. We stayed with my friend Morgan who has a great (but tiny) place in SoHo. SoHo is for sure one of my favorite parts of the city. Some great eating places I would recommend are: Cafe Lalo, Alice's Tea Cup, Lombardi's Pizza, Rice to Riches, Pinkberry, Chai, Provence and falaffels from the street vendors. Thanks so much to Morgan for letting us stay with her! Can't wait for my next trip to NYC :)

Cute little bakery around the corner from Morgan's apartment we went to several mornings.
One of my new favorite musicals -- highly recommend seeing it if you get the chance. It opened just a few days ago and we got great 7th row seats for cheap. Loved it!
Pinkberry! We have to get one of these in Texas...
Mary Poppins
We got to meet up with several TCU friends who are living there -- Annie, Kyo, me, Morgan, and Carrie.
Natural History Museum
We watched the tv show "You are the one that I want" (yes, we know we are cool) and loved Max who won the part of Danny. Of course loved Grease!
Times Square
The mob that was the St. Patrick's Day parade. Carrie and I got stuck in this horrible mob during the parade...but we did get to look at all these cute NY firemen in their uniforms so it wasn't all awful.
Gotta love all the New York cupcakes (with sprinkles!)

Ryan came to hang out with us for the weekend.
Go Frogs! in New York. Morgan, me, Michelle, and Carrie.
Favorite place in Central Park.
The Mall in Central Park
Cafe Lalo...its in You've Got Mail and it was delicious.

Quiet & Gentle?

While doing my Bible study this week, I read this verse...

"...the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in
God's sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope
in God used to make themselves beautiful." -- 1 Peter 3:3-5

A gentle and quiet spirit?! Hmmm...not sure I exhibit a gentle and quiet spirit very often, especially not the quiet part. I mean sure I'm shy when I'm uncomfortable but my family and close friends will tell you -- I like to talk. When I was younger I often got "N's" at talks at appropriate times and I always used to tell my mom, as I was talking her ear off, "my mouth is full." And I still feel like my mouth is full often. So does that make me less of a woman of God? Does that disappoint Him? I continued to think about this quiet and gentle spirit a woman is supposed to possess. How do I find the balance between being a strong, confident woman and having that quiet, gentle spirit?

Through reading and time with God I began to realize He is not so much asking me to be quiet and not talk, but more to be at ease and peace with who I am through Him. In doing that I will not only calm my spirit, but those around me as well. In Captivating, (one of my most favorite books) the authors, John & Stasi Eldredge, talk about what it looks like when a woman is striving vs. when she is at rest. When not at rest, she can become controlling and domineering. However, on the other side...

"...what it's like to be with a woman at rest, a woman comfortable in
her feminine beauty. She is enjoyable to be with. She is lovely. In her presence
your heart stops holding its breath. You must relax and believe once again that
all will be well." -Captivating

I want to be that woman. As women, we are supposed to exhibit special characteristics of God -- we are supposed to show his quiet/gentle side. We bring a tenderness to situations that this world desperately needs. I take so much comfort in knowing, as a woman, I get to bring that side of our Lord to the table. I do think its okay (well, actually, more than okay) for a woman to show strength but I think it needs to done in the uniquely feminine way God made us.

"We do long to be fought for; loved enough to be courageously
protected. But there is a mighty fierceness set in the hearts of women by
God...Women are warriors too...offering a tender vulnerability can only be done by an incredibly strong woman, a woman rooted in Christ Jesus who knows whose she is and therefore knows who she is." –Captivating

I could seriously quote that whole book right here. But that quote is exactly my point...that is what He is talking about in a quiet and gentle spirit. So what God is teaching me right now is to find peace in Him so that I can have that easy, tender spirit. So that I am not controlling and uneasy. Lord, give me that inner peace that only you can provide. Help me to remember to turn to you always so that I don't get anxious and restless by the everyday worries I bring upon myself and in turn try to take the control of my life away from You. Let me be a reflection of You in how I treat others--with kindness, love, gentleness, and tenderness. Help me to know when its time for me to be quiet and listen and time to speak up.

I said before I didn't think He was asking me not to talk (I'm still going to talk plenty I'm sure and make jokes when I'm uncomfortable...or comfortable) but I do think He is asking me to think before I speak and to be careful to make sure my words are positive and affirming to others and Him. Sometimes I think my sarcastic sense of humor goes too far--it can cut people down rather than build them up and I need to be careful with that. There are times when I need to learn to listen more and talk less (with God and with others).

It was a joke in my family that this saying really applied to me and, while it may be trite and silly it is still something that is helpful for me to remember--"Lord, fill my head with worthwhile stuff and nudge me when I've said enough."

New Look

So along with the new look, I'm going to try and start a new phase in my blog too. I'm going to try and write more often - make this more like a journal. Yeah, we'll see how it goes -- I've never been great at keeping at journal. The Lord is teaching me some great stuff right now that I want to write down for myself. But, of course, I will continue to have my MANY pictures and funny/interesting (or at least funny/interesting to me) stories from 3rd grade and my life :)
